Auto-Investments: hands-off HSA investing

Automated HSA investing for a US health-benefits platform — let members put idle health-savings cash to work without managing every buy, across two investment models and the full lifecycle of turning it on, changing it, and turning it off.

Key outcomes

  • Translated a dense product spec into a single coherent interaction model — one mental model across two very different investment styles.

  • Designed the feature around control and reversibility, not just the happy path — the reason people trust automation with their money.

  • Held a clear privacy boundary between what a member sees and what an admin can.

Context

A US health-benefits platform wanted "set it and forget it" HSA investing: keep a chosen cash floor, auto-invest the excess. Product handed off a detailed spec — the interaction model, full state coverage, and trust mechanics were mine to design.

What I learned

Most of a money-movement feature's value is in the states nobody screenshots — the pauses, the reversals, the privacy lines, the "what happens when the buy hasn't settled yet." Designing those well is the entire difference between automatic feeling effortless and feeling like you've lost control of your own account.
